The days of data center operators’ deploying only switches with fixed function silicon from incumbent vendors are long gone. Programmable silicon has rapidly found its way into traditional switch vendor portfolios. IHS Markit forecasts that DC Ethernet switch data plane forwarding silicon units growth between 2018 and 2023 will be driven by programmable (+20% five-year CAGR) and merchant silicon (+5% five-year CAGR) while proprietary units will decline (-6% five-year CAGR).
