This insight is intended to provide an early glimpse of the state of the (mostly enterprise) networking market and an outlook for the next quarter. COVID-19 has been the dominant topic for the last three months, profoundly impacting how we live our lives. When this crisis began to hit North America and Europe in mid-February, we were in the middle of updating our quarterly market share reporting for 4Q19 and CY19 and our forecasts through 2024 and had little idea of how COVID-19 might affect enterprise networking, if at all. On March 14, 2020 Microsoft announced a definitive agreement to acquire Metaswitch Networks, following on from its April acquisition of Affirmed Networks within its Azure business. Microsoft has signaled its intent to be a player in 5G market through offering a virtualized network software portfolio with these two acquisitions that spans mobile core, edge, and applications. It will run the Affirmed and Metaswitch solutions on the Azure platform for operators and will manage the network workloads in the cloud. As operators have turned to software-based and virtualized solutions, cloud operators such as Microsoft and Oracle have been stepping up to run and operate core elements as platforms as a service for emerging 5G networks and applications. This will be a new area for Microsoft. Clients, please log in to view the full content.
