Samsung Display has ever been the largest LCD maker in the world but in recent years the company starts to restructure the LCD business. As the company strategy shift to RGB OLED, QD OLED and QNED and so on, Samsung Display will retreat from LCD business in 2020-2021, and possible remain only a small portion of the LCD capacity from then to serve on specific customers and specific applications. This analysis provides the logical explanation about the reasons why Samsung Display restructure the LCD business. Omdia summarizes seven main reasons: large area LCD, profitability, China’s growing LCD capacity, the strategic shift between LCD and OLED, the value added for LCD, supply chain leverage, the open cell business model and the new focus of quantum dot display.
