Microsoft to move further into 5G with Metaswitch

On March 14, 2020 Microsoft announced a definitive agreement to acquire Metaswitch Networks, following on from its April acquisition of Affirmed Networks within its Azure business. Microsoft has signaled its intent to be a player in 5G market through offering a virtualized network software portfolio with these two acquisitions that spans mobile core, edge, and applications. It will run the Affirmed and Metaswitch solutions on the Azure platform for operators and will manage the network workloads in the cloud. As operators have turned to software-based and virtualized solutions, cloud operators such as Microsoft and Oracle have been stepping up to run and operate core elements as platforms as a service for emerging 5G networks and applications.
