Julian Watson

Julian Watson is a principal analyst at Omdia, on the IoT Connectivity and Platforms team.

Mr. Watson is responsible for the IoT Devices Market Tracker, which sizes IoT device shipments and installed base by region, market sector, application and connectivity type. His additional research areas include IoT gateways, IoT edge computing, 5G and telecoms operator IoT strategies. His recent custom and webinar topics include the convergence of unified communications and IoT, and public safety applications for the IoT edge and IoT gateways. Previously, he was an analyst and managed Omdia's Telecoms Operator Research team that that covers syndicated and custom research in the areas of quad-play bundling, telecoms regulation, fixed broadband and VoIP. Mr. Watson read politics, parliamentary studies and Russian, and he holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Leeds, United Kingdom. He speaks Russian.

u-blox acquires Thingstream in a bid to stave off commoditization in the cellular IoT module industry

u-blox, a key cellular IoT module vendor, announced on 1 April 2020 that it had acquired Thingstream, an IoT mobile virtual network operator. With the acquisition, u-blox joins other mainstream module vendors in becoming more vertically integrated in order to reduce the threat of commoditization increasingly posed by Chinese module vendors. This article examines Thingstream’s offering and differentiation in the market, and the rationale for Thingstream’s acquisition by u-blox.
