Omdia Cinema team has now published the Q2 2020 data for the cinema operator database. This operator database currently covers 230 key cinema operators with 411 brands around the world with a total number of 92,654 screens.

Highlights of the first half of 2020:

  • US cinema chain Goodrich filed for bankruptcy on 27th Feb. 2020. NY Group, a partnership of Mason Asset Management and Namdar Realty Group, acquired 21 Goodrich cinemas out of the bankruptcy.
  • The acquisition deal between CMX Cinemas (US) and Star Cinema Grill (US) was cancelled due to the withdrawal by CMX. In April 2020, it was reported that CMX Cinemas had filed for bankruptcy.
  • In June, UK based Cineworld pulled out of a deal to acquire Cineplex Entertainment, the largest Canadian cinema operator with over 1,700 screens. The deal was reported to be worth $2.3 billion.
  • United States registered the highest screen net loss of 147 screens in Q2 (for covered operators), and cinema closure was part of the reason. Cinemark has a net loss of 46 screens in Q2, Regal lost 31 screens and AMC lost 28 screens. Some of the cinemas closed permanently during Q2 were AMC Star Southfield 20, Cinemark 18 in Tarentum and Cinemark Tinseltown 14.
