Omdia has tracked funding and M&A activity for 15 major platform companies since 2010. Funding activity has seen a significant downturn in 2019 as platform companies pull back from investing in almost all sectors – bar developer tools and analytics. Previous areas of interest including transport travel and logistics, hardware, commerce and retail and health and wellness all saw significant falls in the number of deals tracked and the level of funding going into those sectors. The number of M&A deals fell only slightly on 2018, from 43 to 42 in 2019, with US based platform companies making 33 of those acquisitions, of which 22 were based in the US. The shift in start-up funding from the US to China indicates a reduced pipeline for future US M&A.
