The Satellite 2020 industry conference in Washington DC the week of 9 March is most likely the last in-person conference I’ll attend until late summer 2020 at the earliest. The conference was excellent, even though the last day was cancelled as the District government imposed a new ban on public gatherings. Many interesting topics were discussed by presenters and panelists at the show. Five that are summarized in this show report are:

  • LEO constellations have become a key “NewSpace” market segment
  • Launch and manufacturing is diversifying with reusability and 3D printing
  • 5G connectivity (hopefully) coming for satellites
  • Flat panel/electronically steered antennas will be key components of LEO satellite networks
  • “Responsible space” becomes increasingly important in a crowded orbital environment
