The expected launches of Apple TV+ and Disney+ in November illustrate the major shift now occurring in the TV and online video market as more firms move into the business of over-the-top (OTT), direct-to-consumer (D2C) video services. IHS Markit’s Consumer Research: Devices, Media and Usage intelligence service looks at the number of potential households and devices both services will be able to reach at launch, taking into account device penetration and overlaps in ownership. With a total of 11.5 billion video-streaming-ready products expected to be connected to the internet worldwide in 2023, device distribution deals must be carefully considered.
