Key findings

  • In-folding: the materials and the mechanism issues caused by the small folding radius.
  • Out-folding: image sticking caused by the partial lighting, optimization in terms of usage and protection of the folded screen.
  • The rollable display must resolve said issues, which indicates that in-folding and out-folding displays are not different options, but rather two different components of one solution.

Where can displays go after the foldable technologyThe rollable display is perhaps the most competitive candidate. LG Display (LGD) launched the rollable organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TV because the rolling radius is not an issue. But for small size panel applications, such as smartphones, it still remains at the conceptual stage. The below picture shows BOE’s demo at the Society for Information Display’s Display Week 2019.

If the rollable display is the future of the foldable display, which of the in-folding and the out-folding displays has the potential to become the mainstream option?

For the in-folding design, the materials and the mechanism issues caused by the small folding radius must be resolved. As for the out-folding design, the issues such as image sticking caused by the partial lighting, optimization in terms of usage and protection of the folded screen must be worked out. Unfortunately, for the rollable display, all these issues must be fixed, which indicates that in-folding and out-folding displays are not different options, but rather different components of one solution.

For example, when consumer uses a rollable display, they will often extend the display, which then causes image sticking

Before BOE’s demo this year, EverDisplay showcased another rollable display demo. Both of these appear to be concept prototypes rather than engineering demos.

In the TV market, LGD launched the rollable OLED TV because the rolling radius is not an issue, and its application is simpler than that of mobile electronic devices.
