On 9 July 2019, Cisco announced its intention to acquire optical communications specialist Acacia (ACIA) for $2.6B or $70 per share. Acacia is a leader in high-speed coherent optical networking technology, which is used in applications including data center interconnect (DCI), metro, long haul, and subsea fiber optic communications. Motivations for Cisco’s acquisition of Acacia include increasing vertical integration in its optical systems business, supporting IP-optical convergence with high-performance pluggable coherent transceivers, and having the expertise in-house to address future opportunities for coherent optical technology including high-speed, shorter reach connectivity within data center and enterprise environments.
