Marking ten years since the launch of its first Kindle e-reader, Amazon recently introduced the All-New Kindle Oasis, the second generation of the brand’s Oasis e-reader series. The All-New Kindle Oasis, also known as Oasis 2 has received several significant improvements from its predecessor, the Kindle Oasis (April 2016 model).

Upgrades include waterproofing, a larger screen size, ambient light sensors, metal enclosure, Bluetooth connectivity and a more powerful, built in battery. The Oasis 2 is priced at $249.99 for its base model, $40 less than the original Kindle Oasis with its leather battery case.

Our Analysis

The most striking improvement with the Oasis 2 is the waterproofing. Sporting an IPX8 rating, the device is protected against continuous immersion in water of depths up to 2 meters for a duration of 60 minutes. This serves users who use their Kindle’s poolside, at the beach, or perhaps in the bathtub. One trade-off of the waterproof upgrade is the exclusion of the 3.5mm headphone jack in the Kindle Oasis 2. Users can still connect headphones through the USB port or use a wireless pair. For any user who has lost an e-reader to drowning, this is a welcome improvement.

The new unit features a larger display size, measuring 7-inches on the diagonal (previously 6-inches for the Kindle Oasis). The larger display still maintains its 300 pixels per inch resolution. The 7-inch screen can now accommodate 30% more words per page but without sacrificing display quality. In addition, the Oasis 2 is equipped with ambient light sensors that enable the system’s backlight to auto-adjust to the environment for optimum reading experience. The LED backlight has been expanded from 10 lights in the Kindle Oasis to 12 in the Oasis 2, delivering enhanced brightness when needed.

Another key addition to the New Kindle Oasis 2 is that the device now supports Amazon’s own audiobook service, Audible. Users who own both the e-book and Audible version of a title can switch between physical reading and spoken audio seamlessly. As the e-reader does not have built-in speakers or a headphone jack, accessing the audio requires using a Bluetooth enabled wireless headphone or speaker.

The Oasis 2 is also faster, incorporating a dual core 1GHz NXP i.MX7D processor, a significant upgrade from the Cortex A9 chip in the Kindle Oasis. The internal memory for the base model has been increased from 4GB to 8GB for Kindle Oasis’ latest model. The system is priced at $249.99 for the 8GB version, and $279.99 for the 32GB model.

A new, aluminum finish enclosure gives the device a more premium look and feel than the original Oasis’ plastic body. Unlike the older Kindle Oasis that requires an external battery attached to its leather case, the newer model has its own built in battery with higher capacity that can last up to six weeks per charge. More battery life and a higher end finish but still only 8.3mm at its thickest point.

At nearly $250 for the base model, the Kindle Oasis is considerably more expensive than popular e-readers such as the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite ($89.99) and the Kobo Aura ($119.99). For that extra investment users are getting a waterproof unit with a larger screen, an upgraded aluminum body, and a stronger backlight. It is also lighter (194g) than the Kindle Paperwhite (205g), a plus for those who favor one-handed operation.

At three times the cost of the baseline Kindle e-reader, the Oasis 2 is likely to occupy niche status in the Kindle line-up initially, appealing to premium customers. For those willing to invest in the Amazon Kindle Oasis 2, this device will serve as a luxury e-reader with comprehensive features, innovative improvements and enhanced reading experience.
