Wireless power beyond mobile phones and charging mats

According to the latest forecast for the IHS Markit Wireless Power Market Tracker, unit shipments for wireless power receivers and transmitters are set to grow to over 2 billion units shipped in 2025. Mobile phones remain the biggest driver of wireless charging adoption and consumer awareness, with receiver shipments for this product category set to exceed 250 million shipments annually in 2017.

The industry saw Samsung set a precedent for wireless charging in the mobile phone market when it included the technology on its flagship Galaxy device for the 3rd year running. Alongside this is the mounting expectation around Apple’s launch this fall, demonstrating that wireless charging technology is clearly achieving mainstream adoption in the mobile phone market and the scope of its application is expected to follow suit in other applications quickly.

Wireless charging product scope diversifies

2017 has already seen the announcement from WiTricity and Dell to launch an enabled laptop device in to the consumer market, what opportunities lie in other consumer applications? The latest IHS Wireless Power Market Tracker data update reveals great prospects for potential adoption in other consumer applications. For example, with wireless charging set to break the laptop market, PC peripherals offer a logical next step.

The market saw the Logitech G PowerPlay Wireless Charging System, launched by Logitech for its gaming mice in June 2017. The system is said to use a proprietary technology, similar to the Airfuel Resonant specification and is expected to start being shipped to customers around July 2017. Other product launches in this category are also expected later this year, such as Corsair’s Concept Zeus Mouse, demoed at Computex 2017. With activity in the PC peripheral market growing, more OEMs are expected to join the party, exploring integration in to new applications and pushing unit shipments for enabled consumer devices up over the next 10 years.

Uncoupled technology charges forwards

2017 is also showing signs of being the year uncoupled technology providers’ start targeting mainstream OEMs. In June ON Semiconductor announced its agreement to start integrating its power management components with PowerSphyr’s wireless power transfer (WPT) technology, which combines near-field and far-field wireless charging. This partnership announcement follows the manufacturing agreement PowerSphyr made with Gill Electronics earlier this year, and is one step closer to the goal of producing multi-technology solutions, which meet the varying use cases required by different device types.

With this news, along with additional announcements from uncoupled technology providers Solace Power (received investment from Lockheed Martin to develop its wireless power technology in Atlantic Canada) and Energous (received additional investment of $15million from Dialog Semiconductor), the opportunity for uncoupled technologies in the wireless charging market is quickly mounting. Over 350 million uncoupled and combined system receivers are expected to ship in to consumer, industrial and medical markets in 2026.
