As we typically do, IHS performed an in-store of TV shopping activity at a selection of retailers on Black Friday this year. With key retailers opening at 5-6pm on Thanksgiving Day, we were not able to attend the initial openings of these stores, but followed up soon thereafter. Initial impressions are that in-store traffic at some retailers may have been down slightly, but not surprisingly given the record growth in online sales that begin early on Thanksgiving day, which lessens the need to go in-store to shop except for the in-store only doorbuster items. TV interest seemed high, and shoppers were actively engaging with sales associates to ask questions about 4K, HDR, quantum dots and other new TV technology. However, it became apparent that consumer confusion is still high around these technologies, and even the most educated sales associates were not fully up to par on knowledge themselves.
