The total number of monthly active users  of select messaging apps were around 4.8 billion in Q2 2016. The growing popularity of mobile messaging apps has lead to more competition among mobile companies. While not a dedicated messaging platform, Facebook-owned Instagram is competing with messaging app Snapchat by introducing Instagram stories in its August update. Apple’s iMessage now also enables self-disappearing messages, Facebook Messenger has Instant Video features and Instagram and Twitter are also updating their direct message features.
