IHS Technology analysis and commentary on the IMS Vendor Scorecard follows.
- The IMS Vendor Scorecard classifies vendors as leader, established or challenger depending on their overall scores in a number of criteria including direct feedback from buyers, vendor market share, market share momentum, financials, brand recognition, reputation for innovation and other benchmarks
- For the second year in a row, Ericsson, Huawei and Nokia were named leaders
- Mitel and ZTE were classified as challengers, while no vendor qualified as established this year
There are over a dozen vendors around the globe that make and sell carrier voice over IP (VoIP) and IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) equipment. The five vendors profiled in the IHS Technology IMS Vendor Scorecard—Ericsson, Huawei, Mitel, Nokia and ZTE—were selected because they are the top revenue producers for core IMS solutions.
The IMS market is highly competitive among the top three vendors—Ericsson, Huawei and Nokia—in terms of market share. There are a number of specialty vendors that focus only on one piece that do well in their individual categories, but as a whole these three take the lion’s share of revenue. Aside from market share, vendor differentiation falls roughly into two categories: financial health and customer perception. The three scorecard leaders—Ericsson, Huawei and Nokia—also rise above the rest when it comes to customer perception.
Although “challenger” Mitel is the smallest IMS vendor in the group, it is viewed by service providers as a top innovator, which has enabled it to have a presence in the market in the face of larger telecom equipment vendors. ZTE, also classified as a challenger, is well established in its home country of China and has done well penetrating Eastern Europe, Africa and South America. ZTE was among only three IMS vendors that gained market share in 2015.
IMS Scorecard Synopsis
The only report of its kind, the annual IHS Technology IMS Vendor Scorecard evaluates the top IMS vendors on criteria using concrete data and metrics, including market presence (market share, financials, solution breadth and buyer feedback on product reliability and service/support) and market momentum (market share momentum, next-gen intensity, buyer feedback on vendors’ technology innovation). The report includes a Leadership Landscape Graph that classifies vendors as “Leader,” “Established” or “Challenger” based on their scores in these criteria. This approach eliminates subjectivity and ensures vendors are assessed accurately and fairly.
