The IHS Technology Unified Communication (UC) Strategies and Vendor Leadership: North America Enterprise Survey takes an in-depth look at the state of the UC market, where organizations are unifying various types of communication, why they are doing it, what capabilities they need, deployment locations, and which vendors and service providers they are likely to use.

UC integrates fragmented communication modes, such as voice, e-mail and messaging, into a single communication experience.

Following are highlights from the 2016 edition of the survey.

Analyst Note

“Enterprises participating in our latest unified communication study indicated that when evaluating cloud UC providers, the most important criteria are quality of service (QoS) guarantees and security. It’s a big step to move key applications and capabilities such as voice to a third party, and businesses want to ensure there is no disruption of service and that it is being done in a secure environment.”

Unified Communication Survey Highlights

  • Companies are deploying unified communications (UC) to improve employee productivity and response times and reduce operational costs
  • The use of collaboration tools continues to rise, including the arrival of team collaboration, which has gained momentum from upstarts such as Slack and established vendors like Cisco with Spark
  • Web and video conferencing are increasingly important tools for enterprises: 84 percent of respondents plan to implement video and web conferencing into their UC solutions by February 2017
  • Most organizations are not going all-in with the cloud, instead opting to put some applications in the cloud while keeping other pieces on premises
    • 27 percent of respondents implement their UC solutions within a private cloud, 23 percent deploy UC as a service (UCaaS), and the rest keep UC on premises
  • Businesses surveyed view Microsoft as the leading premises-based and cloud UC supplier, with Cisco a strong challenger
