Total consumer spending on physical disc in South Africa (rental and retail combined) declined by 32.5% between 2014 and 2015, from ZAR 1.0 billion to ZAR 850.0 million ($82.2 million).
The total market for physical disc retail, which accounted for a 61% share of total market spending in 2015, declined from ZAR 646.9 million down to ZAR 520.5 million ($48.0 million). Driving this decline was DVD, with unit sales dropping by 18.2% to 5.3 million purchases over 2014. Blu-ray Disc (BD) volumes declined 29.4%, down to 0.350 million at year end 2015. Average retail price for both formats was steady at ZAR 87.71 ($6.09) for a DVD and ZAR 158.99 ($11.03) for a BD.
Total consumer spending on physical rental in South Africa declined 13.0% to ZAR 321.2 million ($34.2 million). The BD format, which only accounted for 3% of total rental transactions in 2015, declined to ZAR 8.3 million from ZAR 9.6 million in 2014 in terms of spending, with average price remaining stable at ZAR 32.24 per BD rental. DVD rental declined to 11.2 million transactions (-13.1%), with consumer spending ZAR 321.1 million at year end 2015, down from ZAR 369.1 million in 2014.
