Google recently announced the Chromecast Audio alongside the new version of its popular Chromecast streaming media dongle. Chromecast Audio differs in being an audio-only device, with a higher quality DAC and a 3.5mm audio output. A 3.5mm cable is packaged with the device, but the device's output is compatible with 3.5mm adapters for both RCA analog and digital optical output.

The device enables Wi-Fi-based music playback, allowing compatible apps to "cast" music to it similar to the video casting traditionally done with the Chromecast. While multi-room control and playback is not currently supported, Google announced that it would be enabled within a few months.

Chromecast Audio is compatible with all audio applications currently supporting the Google Cast standard, including Spotify, Pandora, Rdio, TuneIn, and more.

The device is priced similar to the regular Chromecast at $35, with immediate US availability and international availability expected by the end of October / early November 2015.
