Campbell, CALIFORNIA (March 19, 2015)—Technology market research firm Infonetics Research, now part of IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS), released excerpts from its 2014 Telecommunications Equipment Vendor Scorecard, which profiles and analyzes the 6 leading suppliers of telecom infrastructure, software and services—Alcatel‑Lucent, Cisco, Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia Networks and ZTE. Based on full‑year 2013 vendor data, the scorecard includes 2014 analysis and observations.

The only report of its kind, Infonetics’ scorecard evaluates the top telecom equipment vendors on criteria using actual data and metrics, including direct feedback from buyers, vendor market share, market share momentum, financials, brand recognition, reputation for innovation, solution portfolio and other benchmarks. This approach eliminates subjectivity and ensures vendors are assessed accurately and fairly.

“We published our first Telecommunications Equipment Vendor Scorecard in 2012 to address the need in the market for vendor ratings based on objective data and metrics rather than qualitative quadrants. And for this latest edition, we refined our methodology, still using real data and metrics, to score vendors in a way that tells an even more accurate, nuanced story of the telecom vendor landscape—one that conveys each player’s strengths and challenges,” said Michael Howard, principal analyst for carrier networks at Infonetics Research, now part of IHS, and lead author of the report.

“As a result of these refinements, new to the scorecard is our ‘Leadership Landscape Graph,’ which shows at a glance where each vendor fits in among the top players in the overall telecommunications equipment market, either as leader, established player or challenger,” Howard said. “We’ll be applying this same objective methodology and Leadership Landscape Graph across our range of service provider and enterprise scorecards coming this year.”

  • Huawei stands out as a leader, steadily gaining market share in major telecom infrastructure segments and staking out a strong position in software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV)
  • Cisco is a leader due to its long-time position in carrier networks as the top router and switch vendor, and is viewed by service providers as a rock-solid innovator
  • Landing just outside the leader category due to lower market momentum is Ericsson, whose strong market presence in RAN, services revenues and solid financials puts it in the established player group
  • Also falling just shy of the leader category is challenger Alcatel-Lucent, who put in a strong showing in market share momentum and customer loyalty, but suffered from balance sheet issues
  • Challenger ZTE continues to grow its share in routers, carrier Ethernet switches, mobile handsets and broadband CPE, resulting in fair market share and a good showing in market momentum
  • Established player Nokia Networks has pared back to focus on mobile broadband and its services organization, both good, but these moves placed it at the lower side of market momentum and market presence

Infonetics’ 23-page annual telecom equipment vendor scorecard evaluates the leading vendors in the telecom equipment space using a set of criteria that are commonly used by buyers to select vendors, demonstrate success in the marketplace and position a vendor for future success. The report includes a Leadership Landscape Graph that classifies vendors as “leader,” “established” or “challenger” based on their scores in 2 overall categories: market presence (market share, financials and buyer feedback on product reliability and service/support) and market momentum (market share momentum, next-gen intensity, solution breadth and buyer feedback on vendors’ technology innovation). Vendors profiled include Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia Networks and ZTE. To purchase the report, contact Infonetics:
