This report is part of a series of IHS Technology insight reports based data presented in the IHS Technology Transactional Movie Market Monitor. Each report examines one of the four movie distribution platforms (theatrical, physical, TV-based VOD & digital) from a geographical perspective to further explore regional contributions and major trends driving worldwide consumption for transactional movies.

  • TV-based TVOD as a platform has doubled its share of worldwide transactional movie consumption, from 4% in 2009 to 8% in 2013. TV-based VOD movie transactions are forecast to surpass one billion by year-end 2015.
  • North America, the most mature home entertainment market, generated 358.5 million TVOD movie transactions in 2013. The region generates approximately a 3% share of total worldwide movie transactions via TV-based VOD platforms alone.
  • Despite accounting for 46% of all VOD/nVOD enabled households worldwide in 2013, the Asia Pacific countries covered by this analysis only generated 279.5 million TVOD movie transactions in 2013.
  • Growth for transactional TV-based VOD movie consumption in less mature movie regions has been strong between 2009 and 2013; however, further growth for the platform is dependent on improved network technology and is still limited by geographic and economic difficulties.

  • Outlines specific markets making an impact on the worldwide total for TV-based VOD movies.
