IHS has analysed the performance of the top Social and Communications apps in 10 key countries, USA, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia, India, Canada, Brazil and found that dating apps are the key driver of revenues, while messaging and communication apps lead downloads.

Focusing on the US and big five EU countries, Facebook dominates the top performing app positions across the Google Play and iPhone app store charts. Its recent acquisition of WhatsApp further secures its position and its primary focus on advertising business models limits the Western market opportunity for the business model innovation pioneered by many Asian competitors.
