On May 19th, Swiss-based u-blox, a fabless semiconductor supplier of wireless communication and embedded satellite positioning components and software, announced its acquisition of connectBlue AB, an established provider of industrial-grade short-range radio modules that support Classic Bluetooth, Bluetooth Smart and 802.11 Wi-Fi technology. U-blox states that this acquisition will allow u-blox to offer products that will enable the “last hundreds of meters of connectivity between equipment and the Internet.”)The main applications that the combined company will target are industrial machine-to-machine (M2M), medical equipment, vehicle monitoring, and asset tracking systems.

When it comes to applications such as those listed above, one of the best ways to establish reliable, consistent connections is via short-range connectivity, namely Bluetooth and/or Wi-Fi. ConnectBlue has proven success in the industrial sector, a main focus for u-blox from a cellular standpoint.  Therefore, by adding short-range wireless capabilities, connectblue’s capabilities complement u-blox’s current product portfolio. However, and perhaps more importantly, this acquisition will also allow u-blox to target the wider Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem, which is rapidly expanding to include a variety of industries that will represent emerging revenue opportunities for all wireless module vendors.
