Coming off a record quarter in September, TriQuint announced a new design center in South Korea. The company hopes that having an increased engineering presence in Korea will facilitate “collaboration on technology innovation and future product design” between it and its customers there. In its 2012 10-K regulatory filing TriQuint had listed 6,700 square feet (ft²) of leased space used for “Engineering and Marketing” in Korea. This recent announcement highlights an expansion of the company’s presence in Korea and a push to win more business with the two large handset OEMs based in that country. TriQuint’s major competitors all had a Korean presence as of their latest regulatory filings as well. Avago leases 72,000 ft² of space for research and development and marketing, and Skyworks has a 22,000 ft² design center located in Korea. The expanded presence in Korea will increase TriQuint’s engineering talent pool, but will it result in larger market share with the Korean handset OEMs?
