Smartphones are becoming more commonplace in the mobile arena as consumers continue to use their devices for more than just voice-calling. This growing trend is sparking heavy competition between mobile handset OEMs. Notable is the competitions between mobile OEMs Apple Inc (APPL) & Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd (SEC). There are a number of device features that these two OEMs compete on, including: product design, content, added-features, operating system, and the availability of applications. One feature that both APPL and SEC use to better leverage their flagship smartphones is the display. To understand the competitive advantage each OEM has with their display, one must consider each of the displays’: supply-chain, utilized technologies, and pixel density (PPi).
